E.V Lucas once described the Swan as probably the most ingeniously placed Inn in the world. The sign of the Swan is certainly as old as Queen Anne and the building itself two centuries older than that. The stables remain to show it once horsed stagecoaches and post chaises (Now our Cottage rooms). For generations it has been the haunt of Artists and Fishermen. The great John Constable used to go on painting expeditions with his brewing namesake and no doubt they stayed at the Swan, which even then was a Constable House. Since then, Victorian Artists both famous and forgotten have left their paintings on the panelling of the little lounge. In the Jubilee Year R.Caton Woodville painted a new sign depicting Queen Victoria astride the sign. It did not last long - a Fairy Queen replaced Her Majesty.
The shields at the top of the sign gantry represent the Arms of his Grace The Duke of Norfolk, the Lord of the manor of Bury, and of Lord Leconfield, Lord of the Manors of Stopham, Waltham and Amberely. |
