It was the rapid development of Windermere during the latter half of the 19th century that caused Bowness-on-Windermere and Windermere to become almost as one. Rooms from 88.00 GBP | A Warm Welcome to Lowfell
Bed and Breakfast in Bowness on Windermere
We very much hope that we might have the pleasure of welcoming you to Lowfell - a lovely old lakeland stone country house offering luxury bed and breakfast accommodation in Bowness on Windermere in the heart of the English Lake District, and only a few minutes stroll from the village and the shores of Lake Windermere.
Our location is ideal for walking, cycling, sailing, sampling great restaurants, bistros and pubs, or simply exploring pretty lakeland villages and enjoying spectacular scenery - all with or without your car.
About Low Fell Bed and Breakfast
Bowness on Windermere
Originally built in 1905 as a gentleman's residence, Lowfell is a lovely old Lakeland stone house nestling peacefully behind a high wall in an acre of sunny secluded garden, facing south and west towards the lake and the distant fells.
Pretty Bowness on Windermere (the only village in the lake district actually on a lakeshore) is only a 6 minute stroll away, and bustles with things to do, super shops, and a really good selection of very nice pubs and bistros to suit all tastes - if they wish, guests can eat out every night for the duration of their stay, and never have the need to drive! There's even a small theatre and a rather cute old fashioned 3-screen cinema.
Lowfell is also just an easy 5-minute walk from the shores of Lake Windermere, where boats of all kinds, and the car ferry, ply the lake.
This splendid old house has been our family home for twenty one years (family long flown the nest!) and still, we like to think, exudes the welcome, charm, fun and values of a happy home - with the style, comfort and cleanliness of a small boutique hotel.
We have lived in the Lake District for most of our lives and are more than happy to help you plan walks, days out in the car, or sorties by boat, bus or bike. We know the nicest walks, the best views, the most peaceful places to go - and the best pubs!
The Lowfell bedrooms
Although we have a total of eight bedrooms, Lowfell is our home and we prefer to keep things a bit more exclusive, we therefore only offer B&B in three of our bedrooms - all three are light, sunny and quiet.
Topping the lot!
Wherever we go, Steve and I really look for a warm welcome, cleanliness and a big comfortable bed. We believe anything can be tackled as long as a good night's sleep is in the offing. Our six foot beds are huge and comfortable, with tempur mattress toppers, feather toppers on top of those, and top notch mattress covers to top the lot! Our bed linen is fine percale, our pillows pure down, our duvets are 4.5 tog silk for the summer and 6 tog pure down in the winter (you'd be surprised how little warmth you need on top, with a plethora of cosy comfort underneath!). We do, though, have extra layers available just in case you happen to be a chilly sort of a bod.
All our guest rooms are en-suite, with lovely soap and shower gel from "The Bath House", large fluffy dressing gowns and towels, 20 inch flat screen television and DVD player, hair dryer, tea and coffee making facilities, and a couple of comfortable chairs.
The Garden Room
Obviously this overlooks the garden, with a view towards the lake and fells. This light, sunny and pretty room has a huge and comfy six foot bed with half tester, an en-suite shower room with decent shower (glass door) good sized basin, and surprise! a loo, but no bath.
The Hideaway
This is "a four roomed suite" and is, as the name denotes, hidden away on the second floor of the house with its own staircase. It's pretty, light, sunny, peaceful and very private. There are two adjoining bedrooms here (closing door between) one with six foot bed and the other with two single beds, sleeping a maximum of four people - ideal for a couple, families, friends - or simply two or three ladies travelling together. There is a newly renovated en-suite sandstone bathroom (power shower over the bath) decent basin and loo, and a separate cosy sitting area with comfy chairs, kitchenette and fridge. (Please note - there are no cooking facilities but guests are welcome to bring chilled goodies to store in the fridge.)
2010 proved a year of great change for us here at Lowfell, as we decided to break the mould and offer a much lighter, simpler, healthier, but equally delicious, continental breakfast. We honestly thought that all our lovely guests - old and new - would desert us in favour of hostelries offering the cooked affairs, but guess what? We're as busy as ever!
Breakfast is usually served round our huge oak table in the dining room overlooking the garden, sometimes in the kitchen by |

Rooms from 60.00 GBP | The Black Bull Inn and Hotel was built around 400 years ago as a coaching Inn providing accommodation for travellers, coachmen and horses. The Inn is situated in the picturesque village of Coniston, beside the beck and in the shadow of the ‘Old Man’ mountain.
We have 15 comfortable bedrooms each with bath/shower ensuite, colour TV, tea/coffee making facilities, hair-dryer, full central heating and double glazing. The character of the rooms and inn has however still been retained.
We serve a range of light snacks, catch of the day, hearty meat dishes and vegetarian cuisine.
The most recent addition to our hostelry is a microbrewery, in which we brew our own beer, Bluebird Bitter and Old Man Ale. These are made using only the finest natural ingredients available and our local mountain water. The beer is cask conditioned before being sold to our discerning customers in the bar. |

Rooms from 40.00 GBP | Built in 1710 as a manor house for the Johnstone family, Gretna Hall Hotel is now an ideal setting for your leisure break thanks to its great location, charm and character.
Located just one mile over the Scottish Border, Gretna Hall is the perfect base from which to explore the Scottish Borders as well as the English Lake District, where you'll find many walks, hikes and other attractions.
We are also ideally situated for the corporate traveller being only one mile from the M6/M74 motorway with easy access to many UK cities on route North or South. Our team can cater for everyone, from the single traveller to groups; so were ‘confident you’ll have a pleasant and relaxing stay with us.
For 250 years Gretna Green has been associated with clandestine marriages, and is now one of the world’s most popular wedding locations. From 1792 Gretna Hall was a coaching inn and was the first stop coaches made as they crossed the border.
Much grander than the local ale houses of the time, Gretna Hall attracted a higher class of wedding clients, so many noblemen and aristocrats were married here.
We have 100 bedrooms, a relaxing lounge and bar for enjoying our extensive range of dishes and The Anvil Restaurant. The restaurant has a stress-free quality making it ideal for business and leisure dining.
Our Hotel is perhaps best known for its association with the “Blacksmiths Shop”. Based on site, it offers guests and non residents a chance to experience and learn the history behind this 300 year old establishment.
Whatever your reason for staying with us, our experienced team will ensure your next nights stay, wedding, anniversary, meeting or dinner will be dealt with in a very professional way, from start to finish.
We look forward to welcoming you to Gretna Hall Hotel. |

Rooms from 40.00 GBP | As a small family ran country hotel, we like our customers to think of March Bank as a home from home. It’s this friendly, unpretentious approach that’s made us such a success with locals and visitors alike over the past 20 years.
The property itself was built in 1850 as a shooting lodge for the Graham estate. Set on a hilltop in five acres of what was once known as the debatable lands, an area that both Scotland and England claimed as their own, the views of the surrounding lands are quite spectacular. Thanks to our great location, March Bank also makes the ideal base for anyone wanting to explore the many historic and natural highlights of Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.
Of course you may just want to visit March Bank for a meal, and who can blame you? We take an incredible pride in the dishes we serve. With only the best local produce on offer, including our specialities, game and smoked salmon, every mouthful is worth savouring. What’s more, our meals are great value for money.
The walls of our bar are filled with artworks from renowned local artists, and there’s simply no better place to relax and enjoy a bottle of fine wine, or a dram of malt whiskey.
We wouldn’t call March Bank a home from home if we couldn’t give you somewhere to spend the night. So you can take your pick from six comfortable ensuite bedrooms, or choose to stay in your very own bothy. Then the following morning you can start the day in the best way possible – with a delicious cooked breakfast.
If you’re thinking of getting married in the near future, and are still searching for the perfect setting for your wedding celebrations, look no further than March Bank. On your big day, our hotel can be exclusively yours.
So whether you want to get away from it all for a few nights, treat yourself to a delicious meal, or are looking for a romantic location for your wedding party, we can offer you the perfect solution.
Hope to see you at March Bank soon. |
