The original Littlecote House was built during the 13th and 14th centuries as part of a medieval settlement and was inhabited by the de Calstone family from around 1290. When William Darrell married Elizabeth de Calstone he inherited the house and his family went on to build the original brick mansion in the early 16th century. In 1804 Littlecote passed into the hands of the Leyborne-Pophams and throughout the centuries has been visited by royalty such as Henry VIII who courted Jane Seymour at Littlecote, Charles II and William of Orange.

Rooms from 25.00 GBP | Arkell's and Swindon's newest pub opened its doors to the public on 15 November 2000. The Jovial Monk, at St Andrew's Ridge on the new Abbey Meads estate, is an all-new building and therefore includes all the amenities expected of a 21st Century pub.
But it takes more than bricks and mortar to make a pub, and Arkell's have drawn on their 158 years of experience to ensure that the Jovial Monk has a warm and friendly atmosphere.
From the beginning, Arkell's have put a lot of thought into attracting a wide range of customers . Managing director James Arkell commented: "St Andrew's Ridge is a very new community and we hope that The Jovial Monk will soon become a focal point for local residents".
There are already plans for special events like live music events and quiz evenings, and the Jovial Monk also makes an ideal venue for local groups to meet in comfortable surroundings.
The Jovial Monk also offers overnight accommodation, with six bedrooms - all with en-suite facilities.
Disabled visitors will be pleased to see that Arkell's have paid particular attention to their needs. Access to all areas has been extremely well thought out. This includes the bedrooms which are accessible via a stair-lift.
The name "The Jovial Monk", came from local resident Andrew Batch after Arkell's asked the wider Swindon community to come up with an appropriate name. Andrew e-mailed the brewery with his suggestion, which makes reference to the local history - the area was reputed to have had a monastery, and the brewery felt that the name would bring a smile to it's customers' faces. |
