Description
History comes alive as you wander across the immaculate grounds of Littlecote House, which is a superb Grade I listed Tudor mansion in Berkshire. Indeed this is where Henry VIII wooed Jane Seymour, so the house oozes with romance and history. Enjoy its sumptuous stately rooms, stunning Great Hall and the walled gardens with herbaceous borders, which burst into life during spring. The original Littlecote House was built during the 13th and 14th centuries as part of a medieval settlement and was inhabited by the de Calstone family from around 1290. When William Darrell married Elizabeth de Calstone he inherited the house and his family went on to build the original brick mansion in the early 16th century. In 1804 Littlecote passed into the hands of the Leyborne-Pophams and throughout the centuries has been visited by royalty such as Henry VIII who courted Jane Seymour at Littlecote, Charles II and William of Orange.
In 1929 Littlecote House was purchased by Sir Ernest Salter Wills and remained in the family until 1985 when Sir David Wills sold the estate to the entrepreneur Peter De Savary. Warner acquired the estate in 1996. Along with the house Warner also acquired 34 hectares of Grade II historic parklands and gardens, including a magnificent 17th and 18th century walled garden.
Littlecote House today - The majority of the guest bedrooms are located in a new building adjoining the main house. Much of the ground floor of the house is used as recreational rooms and lounges with care being taken to ensure that the historic aspects of the house are available to enjoy by our guests and day visitors. As well as the main house, be sure to visit the Cromwellian Chapel and Roman Mosaic.
