In the first room we were given, the single bedside lamp did not work and we had to request another bulb. The tea making facilities were on a tray on the window ledge but the kettle had to be stood on the floor near the bed to be plugged into the only available power point. There were two small electric radiators, one of which did not work and because the room was so cold we were offered another, smaller room. Again the bedside lamp did not work because the bulb had been smashed. The only power point here was hanging off the wall. There were holes in the plaster above it where a shelf meant for the kettle etc., had been ripped down. The two beds were ex-hospital cast iron ones with the end rails cut off, making them extremely dangerous to someone disabled and the mattresses were hard and still covered in the original plastic cases which were brittle and badly cracked. The wash basin was extremely tiny with a glass shelf about nine inches above, which made it almost impossible to use safely. All this for £60!!
The main building may have been refurbished, according to the write-up, but the annexe would be closed immediately by the Health and Safety people if they saw it.
As we had the ordeal of a family funeral the next day we felt reluctant to complain further at the time."
