Coventry was the first city to ever be twinned with another when it twinned with Stalingrad in Russia during the Second World War. The people of Coventry wanted to do this to show their support to the Russians during the battle of Stalingrad. The city is now twinned with 27 cities in total. The city is further from the coast then any other city in Britain. For hotel rooms in Coventry go to infotel.co.uk.
Coventry Cathedral was completely destroyed during the Coventry blitz in the Second World War and was rebuilt in a different location in the late 20thcentury, firebombing was to blame and over 4,000 houses were damaged or destroyed. Apart from London, Hull and Plymouth, Coventry was the most damaged city by Luftwaffe attacks. The Coventry/Churchill myth (stating that Churchill knew about the bombing but let it happen so the enemy didn’t learn that they had cracked their code) has been quoted in many films, books and TV series including BBC’s Sherlock and Spooks.
The city has two universities, the University of Warwick on the outskirts of the city and Coventry University. The Warwick arts centre located in the University of Warwick is the second largest arts centre in the UK after London’s Barbican.
One of the largest industrial trades in Coventry is the motor industry, companies such as triumph and Massey-Ferguson were based in Coventry and the famous London black cabs are produced here. These are now the only vehicles that are still wholly built in Coventry. The Coventry transport museum has the largest collection of British made road vehicles in the world
