The hotel is so named as it was originally a 16th Century Farmhouse reputedly given by Oliver Cromwell to his secretary Thomas Thurloe. There are still traces of this hotels beginnings, with the original flagstones and wall decoration which has been relocated inside the hotel, there are also 2 original fireplaces. Since the location of this building was on the former A1 or great South to North road, the building was converted into a hostelry and was a coaching inn for many years.
