Hereford
Hereford is a cathedral city and capital of Herefordshire. It lies on the rive Wye, and its believed this is where its name originated from. Hereford is said to come from the Anglo Saxon word ‘Here’ meaning army or solders and ‘Ford’ meaning a river crossing place, so it is therefore believed a body of soldiers once crossed the river Wye on this site.
RAF Hereford is a non-flying RAF base on the outskirts of the city, it was used as a flying school until the SAS took it over. The fictional Rainbow commandos from Tom Clancy’s rainbow 6 were based in Hereford. The city is also briefly mentioned in Ronin as a ploy to discover an impostor.
Why not pay a visit to Hereford Cathedral, established in 1709 and make sure you see the Mappa Mundi, an internationally important mediaeval map of the world, drawn in the 13th century.
Hereford offers a great shopping experience too, with a number of independent and chain shops including Primark, H&M and Marks Spencer’s; also there are a few small retro shops that shouldn’t be missed!
