The Clarendon Royal Hotel has a rich history dating back to the late 1600’s. It was built as a residence for The Governor in about 1665,when the Duke of York was appointed to Lord High Admiral. Directly opposite the hotel is the remains of the old blockhouse which was part of the artillery defence established for the River Thames by Henry VIII in 1539/40.
