The Hillcarter Hotel was originally built in 1897 as the department store Hill and Carter and it continued in retail use for, approximately, the next one hundred years, changing in name to Blacketts and then Dovecot. The building was renovated in 1997, with neighbouring buildings incorporated to restore the exterior appearance to its original grandeur.
