Flowergate House was built in 1779 by John Addison a local builder for Thomas Campion (Ship owners).
It was designed on the plans of the Mansion House in London.
It was described as the most handsome house in Whitby.
In 1824 the premises were sold and opened as the Crown Hotel
It remained a hotel until the mid-fifties when it was taken over by the Whitby Working Men's Club. After almost fifty years due to the club becoming unprofitable the property was purchased in 2002 and £2million refurbishment was undertaken restoring it back to its former glory.
