Description
The foundation stone for the building itself was laid in 1890, and the house took some five years to complete. It was first opened as a hotel in 1930. However, there are artefacts in the hotel, which date back as far as 1664. Large imposing rooms, oak-panelled and mellowed with the years, a collection of fine oil paintings, ornate carved fireplaces and the magnificent oak staircase tell their own story of a hotel rich in history and character. Blessed with so many architectural and decorative examples of our heritage, not to mention hidden treasures, such as the original mosaic floors in the porch, lain by craftsman brought over from Italy, the house is listed as one of national and historic interest. The Hotel's outstanding interior and location make it a natural choice for the classic English country house in Alfred Hitchcock's production of "The Paradine Case", starring Gregory Peck, and more recently in the BBC's portrayal of the life of Donald Campbell.
Panoramic views invite you to wine and dine in our restaurant, perhaps preceded by a drink in our intimate bar. Designed to complement the setting, the variety of food and wine is sure to delight the most discerning diner, and being pampered by our attentive staff will be one of the many highlights of your stay with us.
Lunches and afternoon teas are available indoors or out on the lawn fringed terraces. Dinner is always a special occasion and our rosette awarded restaurant boasts a fine speciality selection in addition to the delicious Table d'hôte dinner menu. For your special occasion, be it wedding, anniversary, cocktail party or a birthday treat, we can create a special menu and offer private dining facilities.
All the bedrooms are individually and tastefully furnished, some with unique features such as jacuzzi bath, four poster bed and stained glass ceiling roof, most have lake views and all have private bathrooms.
The hotel also boasts a unique bedroom. This particularly romantic room is situated over the boat house, where you will be lulled to sleep to the sound of gently lapping water.

We can be found by the lake shore on the A591 between Windermere and Ambleside, in the beautiful Lake District.
