"This is my kind of hotel. It's in the most beautiful street in St Albans, which is a joy to walk down, with its with amazingly high pavement and assortment of historic houses. It's also very peaceful, a welcome relief from the town centre.
The Lower Red Lion is also a welcome relief after the pubs in town - no bouncers on the door here! You get a real sense of privilege being taken to your room, up a staircase leading from the lounge bar. The uneven floors, thick walls and wealth of beams are a testament to the age of the building. My room was lovely - simply and charmingly furnished - a far cry from the bland, designer uniformity of so many hotel chains.
The room and bathroom were also beautifully clean but the best thing was the sound of the Abbey bells through the window.
I would highly recommend this hotel - it's a million times nicer than staying in one of those lodges next to petrol stations on the motorway (and almost as cheap). "
