Description
A renowned 17th century Coaching Inn in the heart of Shrewsbury, with a reputation for friendly hospitality and a traditional atmosphere.
Once a renowned coaching inn in the heart of Shrewsbury, The Lion was first established in 1618 although parts of the building date right back to the 14th and 15th centuries. The hotel offers 59 en suite bedrooms, with all the modern amenties, including the Dickens Suite, with exposed original oak beams and balcony and views of Wyle Cop. Staying in this room, it is clear to see why Charles Dickens enjoyed the room so much and commented once in a letter,
"..we have the strangest little rooms, the ceilings of which I can touch with my hand. The windows bulge out over the street, as if they were little stern windows in a ship and a door opens out of the sitting room onto a little open gallery with plants in it where one leans over a queer old rail and looks all down hill and slantwise at the crookedest old black and yellow houses…”
Today, its unique ambience continues to attract visitors looking for somewhere special to stay whilst exploring the historic town and its surrounding countryside and Welsh borders. This historic hotel is ideally located to visit the many attractions of the region. Its reputation for hospitality has attracted many famous names over the years including Charles Dickens, King William IV and Madame Tussaud's. Whether your visit is purely leisure or linked to business, you will receive high quality service and experience a refreshing and friendly atmosphere at the Lion Hotel.
In the refined atmosphere of the Sam Hayward Room, which is open for both lunch and dinner, guests can enjoy many chef's specialities on our A La Carte menu, all using local produce, local ingredients and local suppliers.
Teas, coffee and mouth-watering range of traditional bar meals are served in the Tudor and Oak Bars and in the two eminently comfortable lounges, one with an original fireplace.
The magnificent 18th Century listed Adam Ballroom, once the venue of grand balls and concerts is a truly wonderful venue for a wedding, with its chandeliers and ornate ceilings. For the smaller occasions, there is the Lion Room, done in a similar style to the Adam Ballroom. On such a special occasion, there is no better place to share your memories with, than in a hotel that has graced nobility and royalty.
